Visiting Faro in August
August weather in Faro
August is hot, bright and mostly dry. Afternoons feel sticky in the sun, while evenings stay warm enough for a meal outside around Praça de São Francisco. The high reaches 28°C, and the low is 20°C. Rain is rare, so you can usually count on clear weather for a boat trip through the Ria Formosa.
The Old Town's narrow lanes and Faro Cathedral are better explored before the strongest afternoon heat. Save that time for a shaded lunch or a rest, then head out again later. A cataplana, a seafood stew cooked in a clam-shaped pot, makes a good local dinner.
Beaches and August crowds
Ferry rides from Faro reach the barrier islands, including Ilha Deserta. The beach is a welcome escape, but the open sand offers little shade. Avoid a long midday walk there; go later, or spend the hottest part of the day on the water.
If you hate crowds, August isn't the quiet month to visit. It's peak summer in the Algarve, and beaches, ferries and restaurants are busy. Prices are generally higher than in quieter months, such as spring or autumn. Travelling with kids? The calm waters around Ilha de Faro can suit a beach day, though you'll share the shore with plenty of other families.
Holidays and local tips
August 15 is the Assumption of Mary, a public holiday in Portugal. Some shops may close or change their hours, so don't count on every business being open as usual. Faro's churches may hold services for the day.
For Ilha Deserta, check the ferry timetable at Faro's waterfront before setting off. The island has no road link to the city, so missing the return boat can leave you waiting for the next one. The trip is worth it for a quieter stretch of sand away from the city streets.
