Visiting Erbil in September
September is still hot
September feels like a long step down from August, but Erbil is still very hot. Days reach 38°C, and nights stay around 23°C. The dry air and strong sun can make the afternoon tiring, so save outdoor sightseeing for later in the day.
Erbil Citadel is easier to explore when the sun is lower. You can then wander the lanes around the citadel and the covered Qaysari Bazaar nearby. Skip long outdoor walks in the middle of the day, and don't expect rain to cool things down: September gets only 2 mm.
Events and crowds
There's no fixed major festival that takes place in Erbil every September. Islamic holidays such as Eid follow the lunar calendar, so their dates change from year to year. If Eid falls during your visit, local opening hours and family travel plans may shift.
September is outside Erbil's most comfortable travel months, March to April and November. You'll usually find fewer visitors than in those popular periods, and accommodation prices may be softer. The heat is the trade-off. If you hate crowds, September can suit you, as long as you're happy to explore at a slower pace.
Make the evenings count
Plan your day around the heat. Visit the Citadel late, then head down to Qaysari Bazaar, where the covered lanes offer shade. For dinner, try masgouf, a local favourite of grilled fish, at a restaurant rather than spending the afternoon walking between sights.
Travelling with kids? Keep the Citadel visit short and leave the open courtyards for evening. October is cooler, with highs around 30°C, but September gives you long, sunny days and very little rain. Expect outdoor plans to work best after the worst of the afternoon heat.
