Cool days around the citadel

December feels cool and changeable in Erbil. Days reach about 15°C, but evenings can fall to 4°C. Rain comes on around seven days, so you may get a shower between bright spells. There's less daylight than in spring, too.

It's a good month for the Erbil Citadel and the covered stalls of Qaysari Bazaar, especially when the air feels fresh. Skip long outdoor plans if rain is falling, and don't expect a warm beach-style break. Evenings are better spent over a hot bowl of masgouf or tea indoors.

Christmas in Ankawa

Christmas brings a local reason to visit. Ankawa, Erbil's largely Christian district, has churches and Christmas gatherings; New Year is also marked by local celebrations. Keep plans flexible, since events vary from year to year.

If you're travelling with kids, the citadel's open space is easier to enjoy in daylight than after dark, when temperatures drop. A short taxi ride to Ankawa can make a relaxed evening outing, with cafés and restaurants nearby.

A quieter winter visit

December is generally quieter than the popular March-to-April and November periods. You'll likely find fewer visitors at major sights, and accommodation can be less costly than in those busier months. Christmas and New Year may bring more local activity, but they don't make the whole month feel packed.

A practical tip: visit the Erbil Citadel before Qaysari Bazaar, then duck into the bazaar if rain starts. Its covered lanes give you somewhere to browse without losing your afternoon. Check opening times locally, as winter daylight is shorter.
