Visiting Baghdad in September
September: cooler, but still severe
September brings a small break from August's worst heat, but afternoons can still reach 42°C. Nights stay warm, around 25°C, and rain is almost absent. The sun feels relentless, so sightseeing on foot can be tiring, especially around the open spaces of Al-Mutanabbi Street and the Tigris riverfront.
The cooler parts of the day suit a visit to the Iraq Museum or a drive between sights. Save longer walks for later, and avoid trying to cover the old city on foot in the afternoon. October is easier for outdoor plans, while February to March and November to December are better months overall.
Events, crowds and prices
September doesn't have a fixed annual festival date to plan around. Arba'een, a major Shia pilgrimage to Karbala, sometimes falls in September, but its date shifts with the Islamic calendar. If it does, Baghdad may see more pilgrims passing through, and travel towards Karbala can get busy.
If you hate crowds, September is usually quieter in Baghdad than the cooler high season. The heat keeps many leisure visitors away, and prices may be lower than in peak months. Still, don't assume every hotel or road will be quiet if a major religious event is underway.
Make the heat work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor visits short, and use air-conditioned taxis between the National Museum of Iraq and central Baghdad. You'll enjoy the day more with indoor stops and a slow evening meal than with a packed walking route.
For a local food break, try masgouf, Iraq's grilled carp, at a riverside restaurant. Ask your driver to drop you close to the entrance; the final walk in the heat can feel much longer than it looks. Check local travel conditions before heading towards Karbala during Arba'een.
