Visiting Djibouti in September
September heat
September is still fiercely hot in Djibouti City. Daytime highs reach 38°C, and nights stay around 30°C. August is slightly hotter, but September's heat can still make long walks around the old town feel draining.
There's some rain on a handful of days, though it won't cool things much. Indoor stops, such as the People's Palace, suit the sticky middle of the day. Save outdoor sightseeing for cooler hours, and skip exposed hikes or a long trip to Lake Assal if the heat feels too much. The coast is possible, but don't expect a cool beach day.
Quiet, low season
September doesn't have a major annual festival that falls on a fixed date. Islamic holidays move through the calendar, so their timing varies from year to year.
It's a quiet time to visit, with fewer tourists than in the popular December-to-February season. Hotels and tours may cost less than during those cooler months, though prices vary. If you hate crowds, you'll like the calmer feel around Place Menelik and the central market. The trade-off is that the heat limits how much you'll want to do outside.
Make the heat work
Keep your plans close to Djibouti City, where you can take breaks indoors between short outings. For a taste of local food, try skoudehkaris, a spiced rice dish often made with meat, at a city restaurant.
Travelling with kids? Choose a short visit to the Port of Djibouti area over a long, exposed day trip. If you're heading to Lake Assal, go with a local driver and agree on the route before leaving town. There's little shade on the way, and September's high temperatures make that journey harder. Cooler weather arrives later, so this isn't the easiest month for outdoor sightseeing.
