June heat

June is punishingly hot in Djibouti City. Days reach 40°C, and nights stay around 31°C, so the heat doesn't let up much after sunset. Rain is rare, and the air is less humid than in May, but sightseeing can still feel draining.

Keep city walks around the old European Quarter brief, and save outdoor time for later in the day. The waterfront is pleasant for a short evening stroll. Skip exposed hikes and long midday trips; even the drive to Lake Assal can feel tiring in this heat.

If you're travelling with kids, plan quiet time indoors during the hottest part of the day.

Independence Day

June 27 is Djibouti's Independence Day, marking independence from France. You may see public celebrations and changes to opening hours, especially around central Djibouti City. The exact programme varies, so don't count on a particular parade or event.

Eid al-Adha may also fall in June in some years. Its date follows the lunar calendar, so local schedules can change around the holiday.

Quieter, but very hot

June is low season compared with the cooler months from December to February. You'll generally find fewer visitors and may see lower hotel rates, though prices vary. The trade-off is clear: outdoor sightseeing is much less comfortable than in the best months.

For a Lake Assal trip, arrange an air-conditioned vehicle from Djibouti City and agree on a route with your driver. The lake sits in a stark, exposed landscape, with little shade. Make the drive itself part of the visit rather than planning a long walk there.
