December weather in Djibouti City

December feels warm rather than scorching, with highs around 29°C and evenings near 23°C. The air is still humid, but the brief, occasional showers rarely shape a whole day. You'll have plenty of sunshine for wandering the old centre, visiting the People's Palace or sitting by the Gulf of Tadjoura.

A boat trip or coastal outing is more comfortable now than in the hotter months. The midday sun can still feel strong, though, so save the narrow streets of the old quarter for later in the day. December isn't a great time to count on rain washing away the dust on a long drive.

Christmas and New Year

Christmas is marked by Djibouti's Christian community, including church services in the capital. New Year brings local gatherings, but December isn't known for a large annual festival. You may notice a festive feel in some parts of Djibouti City, rather than city-wide celebrations.

If you're travelling with kids, a calm coastal outing may be easier than finding organised holiday events. Check locally for service times if you'd like to attend a Christmas service.

Crowds and day trips

December is part of Djibouti's best-weather season, which runs through February. It's busier than the hotter months, and demand can push visitor prices up, especially for guided trips. Still, it's not a huge mass-tourism rush, and you can often enjoy the waterfront without summer-like heat.

For Lake Assal, arrange a driver or guided trip from Djibouti City; public transport won't take you straight to the lake. The salt flats and stark volcanic landscape make a rewarding day out in December's milder conditions. If you hate crowds, visit in the shoulder months, but expect more heat.
