Visiting Delhi in July
July: hot, wet and sticky
July brings heavy monsoon rain, but it stays hot and humid. Showers fall on many days, and thick cloud often dulls the sunshine. After June's harsher heat, the downpours can feel like a relief, but they can also leave roads waterlogged.
Outdoor sightseeing can still work between showers. Visit the Red Fort or Humayun's Tomb when the weather clears, then take a long break indoors during the sticky afternoon. Skip plans that depend on dry paths, such as a long walk through Lodhi Garden. Carry an umbrella for sudden rain, and expect traffic delays.
Events and crowds
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed across India in July, including in Delhi. The National War Memorial is a fitting place to learn about the soldiers it honours. The date is July 26.
If you hate crowds, July is a quieter time to visit than the popular months from November to February. Monsoon rain and uncomfortable heat keep many visitors away. Hotels and flights may cost less than in the busy winter season, though prices vary.
Make the metro your friend
Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day stop in mind, such as the National Museum, and avoid squeezing too many outdoor sights into one day.
Delhi's roads can slow sharply when rain causes waterlogging. Use the Delhi Metro for longer hops, then take an auto-rickshaw for the last stretch. For Humayun's Tomb, get off at JLN Stadium and check the local road conditions before taking an auto. The short ride can be much easier than sitting in monsoon traffic.
