Visiting Delhi in August
August feels sticky
Delhi stays hot in August, with highs around 34°C and humid air that can feel heavy. Rain falls on many days, often in sharp bursts, so wet pavements and slow traffic can interrupt a sightseeing day. July is wetter, but August is still firmly in the monsoon season.
The National Museum and Humayun's Tomb work better than a long walk through Lutyens' Delhi when the afternoon feels muggy. Save open-air visits to the Red Fort for a break in the rain, and avoid planning a full day on foot around Old Delhi's narrow lanes. Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible indoor stop in the plan.
Independence Day crowds
India's Independence Day falls on August 15. The main ceremony is at the Red Fort, where the prime minister raises the flag. Security checks and road closures can affect nearby parts of Old Delhi, so don't expect an ordinary visit around the fort that morning. Janmashtami may also fall in August; its date changes each year, and temples such as ISKCON in East of Kailash draw worshippers.
A quieter, cheaper month
August is low season compared with Delhi's popular November-to-February stretch. You'll generally find fewer tourists and better hotel rates, though Independence Day brings a short-lived crowd around the Red Fort. If you want calmer galleries and less competition for restaurant tables, the rainy weather can work in your favour.
For the Red Fort, use the Delhi Metro's Lal Qila station rather than relying on a car through Old Delhi. Monsoon showers can make nearby roads slow, while the metro gets you close to the entrance. Check access rules before setting out on Independence Day.
