Delhi Weather in December

Mild days, cold evenings

December is one of Delhi's most comfortable months for sightseeing. Afternoons reach 24°C, while nights can fall to 9°C, so the contrast is noticeable. Rain is rare, and you'll often get bright sunshine for wandering around Humayun's Tomb, Lodhi Garden or the lanes of Old Delhi.

Evenings feel cold, and winter haze can make the air unpleasant. Keep outdoor plans flexible if pollution is high, and save the India Gate lawns or a long walk for a clearer day. The short daylight hours also mean you'll have less time for outdoor visits than in summer.

Christmas and winter crowds

Christmas brings services and decorations to Sacred Heart Cathedral near Connaught Place. The festive period around Christmas and New Year is busy, especially in central areas and popular markets. Delhi is already in its main winter travel season, so hotels can cost more than during the hot summer or monsoon.

If you hate crowds, visit Chandni Chowk on a weekday rather than during the holiday rush. The lanes are still lively, but you'll have more room to browse and stop for parathas.

Tips for Delhi in December

December works well for monuments, gardens and food walks. It's less suited to late-night outdoor plans unless you're happy to wrap up warm. Travelling with kids? Plan a warm indoor break between visits, such as the National Museum near India Gate.

For Old Delhi, take the Metro to Chandni Chowk station instead of relying on a car through the narrow, traffic-heavy streets. You can warm up afterwards with a bowl of nihari, a slow-cooked meat stew found around the old city.
