December's deep winter

The air is damp, the skies are often overcast, and you'll get very little daylight or sunshine. Snow and icy pavements make walking tiring, especially after dark.

That cold shapes how you spend your days. Keep sightseeing close to the centre so you can duck into a café or museum between stops. A long outdoor walk or a countryside day trip is less appealing in this weather, so the city's indoor museums and theatres are better bets than hours spent outside.

New Year in the centre

If you do come in December, New Year is the big event. Revolution Square usually gets festive decorations and an ice town, with slides and snow sculptures. Kirovka, the pedestrian street, is a pleasant place to see the lights, and you can warm up nearby afterwards. Russians celebrate Orthodox Christmas in January, not December, so don't expect that holiday here this month.

Families who enjoy winter fun may love the ice town, but small children tire quickly in the cold. Keep outdoor visits short and plan indoor stops close by.

Quieter, with a holiday rush

Outside New Year, Chelyabinsk is generally quieter and often cheaper in December than during the popular May-to-June and August travel months. The exception is the New Year period, when the central festivities draw more people and accommodation may cost more. If you want a calmer city break, avoid that holiday rush.

Before you head out, check the ice conditions on the walk between Revolution Square and Kirovka. The short central route can still be slippery, and the limited daylight makes uneven pavements harder to spot. Have a warm indoor stop in mind too, since the cold can cut a stroll short.
