Best Time to Visit Caracas
Venezuela · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Caracas is January to May, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 25°C and 28°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. Rain is heaviest in August, at about 83 mm (3.3 in), and lightest in March, at 20 mm (0.8 in).
When to go to Caracas: a seasonal guide
Dry season: January to April
Caracas sits in a mountain valley, so it's mild all year. Think spring, not steamy coast. From January to April the days are warm, the evenings are cool, and the mornings are often clear. March is the driest month, with just four rainy days. That makes it the best pick for walking up in Parque Nacional El Ávila, the green mountain wall right above the city. Views from the ridge are best when the clouds stay off the peaks.
Want to see the city itself? Dry months suit the old centre around Plaza Bolívar, the Panteón Nacional and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. They also suit an evening in Los Palos Grandes or Chacao for dinner outside. Try an arepa, a griddled corn bun with fillings, or pabellón criollo, the national plate of beef, rice, beans and plantain.
Wet season: June to November
Rain builds from May, which already has ten wet days. From June to October it's showery on 13 to 16 days a month. August and October tie for the most rainy days, at 16. Showers usually hit in the afternoon, so plan museums and markets for then. Save hill walks for the morning.
It's still pleasant, and rarely hot. The cost is cloudier skies and slick pavements. Hikers should skip El Ávila's higher trails after heavy rain, as paths get muddy. If you want fewer people and don't mind a drizzle, this is fine.
Events, crowds and what to pick
Christmas is the big family season. Many Venezuelans travel home, and the city feels festive, with gaita music (a lively folk-pop style from Zulia) and hallacas, tamales wrapped in banana leaf. December is also wetter than you might expect, with 83 mm. Carnival falls in February or March, depending on the year, and many locals head to the coast. Holy Week, the week before Easter, is another time when the city empties out and beaches fill up. Both can be quiet in town.
For a first visit, aim for February to April. You get the driest days and the easiest sightseeing. Travelling with kids or hoping for a cosy city break? January is lovely, though the evenings can feel cool at this altitude.
