Visiting Caracas in January
January weather in Caracas
January feels warm rather than scorching, with comfortable evenings after sticky afternoons. The hills around Caracas can still look cloudy, but there's plenty of sunshine for exploring. Rain falls on some days, though January is drier than December and wetter than February.
You can visit Plaza Bolívar, explore the colonial streets of El Hatillo, or ride the Teleférico Warairarepano up toward Ávila. The mountain ride gives you a break from the city's warmth, but clouds can hide the views. Save long outdoor plans for a dry spell, and don't count on clear mountain panoramas every day.
Holidays and city pace
New Year's Day is a public holiday, so some shops and restaurants may close or open late. Día de Reyes, or Three Kings' Day, falls on January 6 and is marked by family gatherings. It's not a major citywide festival, so don't expect Caracas streets to fill with parades.
The holiday period can bring more visitors and firmer prices around New Year. After that, the city tends to feel calmer than during the Christmas rush. January is still part of the popular dry-season window, so it's not the quietest time of year.
If you hate crowds, visit Ávila after the New Year holiday rather than on a public holiday.
A useful local tip
For the best chance of seeing Caracas from above, take the cable car from Maripérez to Warairarepano on a clear morning. The weather can change on the mountain, and low cloud may cover the view even when the city looks sunny. You can have lunch at the mountaintop restaurants, then ride back down before afternoon clouds gather.
January's mild warmth also suits a walk around Plaza Bolívar, but check which museums are open on January 1. The weather is generally good for sightseeing; it's the holiday opening hours and shifting mountain cloud that need a little thought.
