Two seasons, not four

Valencia sits close to the equator, so temperature barely moves. Days stay around 31 to 34°C all year. What changes is the rain. The dry season runs roughly from December to March. The wet season fills most of the rest of the year, with rain on 12 to 14 days a month in July and August.

Dry months feel bright and easy. Mornings are clear, and you can plan a day outdoors without watching the sky. In the wet months, storms usually build in the afternoon. Mornings are often fine, so do your sightseeing then.

Which month for which trip

December to February is the best bet for most people. It's the driest stretch, with the most sun, and evenings stay comfortable. It suits walking around the centre, including Plaza Bolívar and the cathedral, and day trips to the coast near Puerto Cabello. It also suits the Parque Nacional Henri Pittier, where you'll want dry trails.

March is the hottest month on the page at 34°C, and April ties it. March is still dry, though, so it works if you can handle the heat. April is when the rain starts to creep back.

May to October is greener and wetter. Humidity climbs past 70%, and the air feels heavy by afternoon. If you're not fussed about beach weather and want fewer visitors, these months are fine. Just keep your plans flexible.

November is a handy shoulder month. It's still rated Good, though it's rainier than December.

Crowds and events

Valencia isn't a big international tourist stop, so crowds are mostly about local holidays. Expect busier roads and beaches around Christmas and New Year, and at Carnival in February or early March. Easter week (Semana Santa) is the biggest local getaway. Many Venezuelans head to the coast then, so buses and beach towns fill up fast.

Late July brings the city's anniversary celebrations, since Valencia was founded in 1555. It falls in the wet season, so pack a rain jacket for the evening events.
