November feels warm and sticky, with humid air, frequent cloud and showers on many days. Rain can interrupt a beach afternoon or make inland tracks muddy, so keep plans flexible. You'll still get sunny breaks for a swim at Muri Lagoon or a wander through Avarua's shops and cafés.

The sea and air stay warm, but this isn't the best month for long, dry hikes up the Cross Island Track. Showers can make the route slippery. October is a little drier; December is wetter still. November gets less sun than the dry-season months, so don't expect clear skies all day.

Events and crowds

Vaka Eiva, Rarotonga's outrigger canoe festival, is usually held in November. Races and events bring extra life to the waterfront and Avarua, though dates change each year. It's worth checking the festival schedule if you want to watch the racing.

If you hate crowds, November is often a calmer choice than the July-to-September high season. It's also before the Christmas holiday rush in December. You may find accommodation rates gentler than in peak months, but Vaka Eiva can make the island busier while it's on.

Getting around Avarua in November

Travelling with kids? Choose easy swims and short visits over a full day on a wet trail. A morning at Punanga Nui Market in Avarua is a good rainy-day option too; it's best known for its Saturday stalls, local food and crafts.

Try an island favourite such as ika mata, raw fish marinated in citrus and coconut cream, at a café in town. For Vaka Eiva, ask locally which waterfront spots are best for watching that day's races. Showers can pass quickly, so you can often return to town plans once the rain eases.
