December feels warm, sticky and often cloudy in Avarua. Highs sit around 26°C, and humidity is high. Rain falls on many days, so showers can interrupt beach time and outdoor plans.

You can still enjoy Muri Lagoon, snorkelling when the water is calm, or a wander around central Avarua between showers. The Punanga Nui Market is a good rainy-day stop, though its open-air stalls are less fun in heavy rain. Save long hikes up the Cross Island Track for a drier spell; muddy paths and low cloud can spoil the views. December is one of the wetter months, so July to September is a better bet if reliable sunshine matters most.

Christmas and New Year

December brings Christmas services, church singing and family gatherings across Rarotonga. In Avarua, you may notice the holiday mood around town, but don't expect a large, fixed festival programme. New Year brings celebrations, though details vary from year to year.

December is generally wetter and less reliably sunny than the popular July-to-September months. It's not the busiest time for beach weather, but Christmas and New Year can bring more visitors and firmer prices than quieter weeks. If you hate crowds, avoid the holiday period and come later in the wet season instead.

Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day plan handy, such as browsing Avarua's shops or trying ika mata, raw fish marinated with coconut cream and lime. At Punanga Nui Market, go on Saturday morning and look for local food stalls; it's a useful way to experience Avarua even when the beach plans have to wait.
