Best Time to Visit Cook Islands

Avarua and the islands

Avarua is the main town on Rarotonga, and it's the only place we list. The Cook Islands are spread over a huge stretch of ocean, so the far northern atolls (ring-shaped coral islands) can behave a bit differently. Still, Rarotonga is where most people land, stay and explore, so its pattern is the one to plan around.

Aitutaki, the lagoon island many visitors fly to for a day or a few nights, is close enough that the same seasons apply.

The seasons

July to September is the best window. Days are warm but not sticky, evenings are comfortable, and rain is less of a worry. It's good weather for the Cross-Island Track, the walk from the north coast over the island's rugged middle to the south. The Punanga Nui Market in Avarua on Saturday mornings is also easier to enjoy without a heavy, humid heat.

March is the hottest month at 27°C, and it's also the wettest at 200 mm. No other month ties it on either count in our data. Expect muggy afternoons and sudden downpours that can turn trails slippery and muddy. Showers often pass quickly, so you can still have a good beach day. But if you're set on snorkelling in Muri Lagoon with clear water, the drier months are kinder.

High season, low season and events

The busy months line up with the dry, cooler season, so July to September is also when flights and rooms fill up. Travelling with kids? Expect school holidays from New Zealand and Australia to add to the crowds, since those are the main visitor markets. Book early if you want a beachfront spot at Muri or Titikaveka.

Late wet-season months are quieter. You'll find emptier beaches and easier tables, but you'll need a flexible plan for rain.

Constitution Celebrations, also called Te Maeva Nui, happen around early August. They bring dance, music and island pride to Avarua. It's a great time to be there, but it's also one of the busiest weeks, so lock in your stay well ahead.
