December is generally quieter and often less costly than the popular summer months. But expect more visitors and firmer hotel prices around Christmas and New Year, especially near the Old Town. August and September are busier overall.

If you hate crowds, visit the market on a weekday rather than at the weekend. For an easy festive walk, follow Krakowskie Przedmieście from Castle Square towards Nowy Świat, then duck into a café when the cold gets to you. Try żurek, a tangy rye soup, for a warming meal.
