Best Time to Visit Victoria
Seychelles · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
Weather-wise, June to August is the best time to visit Victoria. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 26°C and 29°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over December and January; January is the wettest month with about 206 mm (8.1 in) of rain. January is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Victoria: a seasonal guide
Two seasons, and a long warm gap between
Victoria sits just south of the equator, so it's warm all year. The real change is the wind. From about November to March the northwest monsoon brings heavier rain and calmer, stickier air. From about May to September the southeast trade winds blow, and the air feels a little fresher.
December and January are the rainy season, and January is the wettest month. It gets 206 mm of rain on 24 days, and December isn't far behind with 185 mm, also on 24 days. So expect warm downpours, grey skies and just a few hours of sun a day. Afternoons are sticky and the nights don't cool off.
Which month for which trip
If you want the most comfortable weather, aim for June to August. July is the driest month, with 56 mm of rain on 13 days, and it's also the coolest, with highs of 26°C. Humidity stays high, though. The trade winds can stir up the sea on the southeast-facing beaches, so check the swell before you pick a beach on Mahé.
Not every good trip fits that window. For snorkelling and calm water, April, May and October are worth a look. The winds ease between the two seasons, and the sea is often flat. April is also the hottest month, with highs of 29°C. March, April and October have the most sun, at over six hours a day, which makes them handy for hiking the Morne Seychellois trails above town or taking the ferry to Praslin.
If you're on a budget, January is cheaper but properly wet, and it's the month we rate Poor. Pack patience and plan indoor time at the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market, where you can browse spices and fresh fish when the rain sets in.
Crowds and events
Timing also shapes how busy things feel. Victoria is a small capital, and most visitors pass through on the way to beaches and resorts. The busiest times are usually the European holidays: Christmas to New Year, plus July and August. Hotels fill up, and flights to the outer islands can sell out. The quietest stretch tends to be May and the early part of the northwest monsoon, in November.
If you'd rather join the crowds, October brings the Creole Festival, a week of music, food and dance across the islands. Expect fish curries, grilled snapper and plenty of live sega, the local dance music. It's worth planning around if you like a lively atmosphere. Book your stay early, because it's popular with visitors and locals alike.
