Best Time to Visit Mogadishu
Somalia · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Mogadishu is June to October and December to March, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 27°C and 30°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. Rain is heaviest in April, at about 74 mm (2.9 in), and lightest in February, at 3 mm (0.1 in).
When to go to Mogadishu: a seasonal guide
Two rainy spells, two dry ones
Mogadishu sits almost on the equator, so it's warm all year. Days stay in the high 20s and nights barely cool off. The real difference is the rain and the wind.
The long dry season runs from December to March. It's the sunniest stretch, with about nine or ten hours of sun a day and almost no rain. February is the driest month, with just 3 mm. April brings the main rains, and it's the wettest month at 74 mm over about ten days. Streets can flood and traffic slows.
Then comes the monsoon, called Gu' and Hagaa in Somali. From June to August the sea is rougher and skies are greyer. July is the dullest month for sun. Rain is lighter than in April, but humidity sits around 80%.
Which month for which trip
For beach time on Lido or Jazeera, go in January, February or March. The sea is calmer and the sun is reliable. Afternoons are sticky, but a sea breeze helps.
September is a quiet gem for a drier spell outside the main dry season. It gets just 18 mm of rain. December is also dry, with only 15 mm. Both suit you if you'd rather skip the peak of the sun.
Want to wander the old Hamar Weyne district, with its coral-stone houses, or the fish market by the port? Pick a dry month so you're not splashing through side streets. April and November are the ones to avoid if you hate wet roads. November is the second rainy spell, with 70 mm.
Crowds, events and practical points
Mogadishu doesn't have a classic tourist high season. Most visitors come for work, family or business, so timing often follows the calendar of the people you're meeting. Many Somalis in the diaspora (those living abroad) come home around Eid and in the summer holidays, so flights can fill up then.
Ramadan and the two Eids shift each year, so check the dates before you book. In Ramadan, daytime eating spots may close, but evenings come alive. Independence celebrations on 1 July and 26 June are also big days, with flags and street gatherings.
Security conditions change, so check your government's travel advice and arrange local support before you go.
