When to visit Somalia
One city, two ways to read the year
Mogadishu is the only Somali destination we cover, so this guide is built around it. The coast here is steady and warm all year. You won't find a cold season. What changes is the wind, the rain and how sticky the air feels.
Our pick is June to October and December to March. Both stretches are mostly dry. If you want the simplest rule, avoid April.
The seasons on the coast
April is the hottest month, at 30°C. It's also the wettest, with 74 mm. No other month is listed as tied with it, so it stands alone. Expect heavy, humid afternoons and sudden downpours. Mogadishu's roads can flood, and that slows everything down. This is the main Gu rainy season, which runs roughly April to June.
From June to October the Indian Ocean monsoon blows from the southwest. The sea gets rough, and the breeze keeps the city feeling less heavy. It's a good time for the Lido area and the seafront, though swimming can be risky when waves are high. Ask locals which beach is safe that day.
December to March is the drier, calmer stretch. The days are warm and the evenings are easy. Many visitors prefer it for walking around the old Hamar Weyne district and the fish market.
Holidays, crowds and practical timing
Somalia has no big tourist season. Mogadishu doesn't fill with holidaymakers, so high and low season matter less than security and logistics. Check your government's travel advice before you book, and arrange local help for getting around.
The bigger factor is the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, many people fast from dawn to sunset, and daytime opening hours shrink. Restaurants can be closed until evening. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bring family gatherings and shut many offices for several days. These dates shift about eleven days earlier each year, so look them up for your trip.
Somalia also marks 26 June (Independence of British Somaliland) and 1 July (Independence Day). Expect closures, and sometimes extra security around events.
Travelling for work? Aim for the drier windows, and keep a spare day for delayed flights and flooded roads.
