Best Time to Visit Mamoudzou
Mayotte · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Mamoudzou is May to October, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 26°C and 29°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over December to March; January is the wettest month with about 255 mm (10.0 in) of rain. February is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Mamoudzou: a seasonal guide
May to October: the dry season
This is the stretch to aim for. Days are sunny, nights are comfortable, and the air feels lighter than the rest of the year. August is the driest month, but July and September are almost the same. Rain barely matters in any of them.
It's the best time to get out on the lagoon. Mayotte has one of the largest enclosed lagoons in the world, and the water is calm and clear. Snorkelling off Moya Beach on Petite-Terre is a good bet. Hiking is easier too. The climb up Mont Choungui in the south is much nicer on a dry, sunny day. From July to October, humpback whales pass through, and boat trips can get you close.
December to April: hot, wet and sticky
The rainy season brings the heat, and it's relentless. January is the wettest month, with rain on 27 days. Showers are heavy, afternoons are sticky, and the sun is often hidden. Cyclones can hit the region in this season, so keep an eye on forecasts. Boat trips get cancelled when the sea turns rough.
Is it worth visiting then? If you're visiting family or have no choice, yes. Plan indoor time around the market in Mamoudzou's centre, and take the barge to Dzaoudzi on the days that stay dry. April is the turning point, with rain easing but still frequent.
Crowds and events
Mayotte isn't a mass-tourism place, so you won't fight crowds anywhere. The busiest times are the French school holidays, especially July and August, when families come to see relatives and flights fill up. Hotels and rental cars are tight then. If you want quiet, go in May, June or October.
Ramadan and Eid shape daily life here, as most people are Muslim. Dates move each year, so check them before you book. Shops can close early and the mood in town changes. Eid is a good time to see families dressed up and gathering. Mayotte also celebrates the abolition of slavery on 27 April, a public holiday.
Which month for which trip?
For beaches, snorkelling and whales, choose July to September. For hiking with milder heat, try May, June or October. November is a decent budget-friendly option, with some showers but plenty of sun.
