When to go to Lilongwe: a seasonal guide
The year in three seasons
Lilongwe has a long dry stretch, a short hot spell, and a wet season. The wet season runs from December to March. Rain falls on most days, and January is the worst. It's grey and sticky, with very little sun. Roads on the edge of town turn muddy, and dirt tracks to lodges can get hard to drive.
April is the turning point. The rain fades and the air clears. The countryside is still green, which makes it one of the prettiest months to be out.
May to August: cool, dry and easy
This is the sweet spot. Days are warm but not heavy, and nights get properly cool, down to 11°C in June and July. You'll want a jumper for evenings, especially if you eat outside in Area 43 or Area 3. Rain is almost absent.
These months suit nearly every trip. Walk the trails at Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, a forest reserve right in town. Visit Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, which cares for rescued animals. Or use the city as your base for the road to Lake Malawi. Dedza and Nkhotakota are both reachable for a day or longer. Travelling with kids? The mild days make long drives much easier.
This is also high season, so lodges and lake resorts fill up. Malawi's school holidays vary, so check them before you pick dates. Even so, Lilongwe never feels packed, and you'll often have trails to yourself.
September to November: hot and quiet
September is dry and sunny, and the city heats up. October and November are the hottest months, with highs of 32°C in both. Afternoons are strong, so plan outdoor time for the morning. Then spend the middle of the day at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre's shady paths or in a café.
October is still very dry. Rain returns in November, mostly in short, heavy bursts. These months are low season, so you'll find easier bookings and calmer markets. The Old Town market and the big Lilongwe Central Market are good places to wander, and the mango season is a treat.
Events and what to pick
Malawi marks Independence Day on 6 July, with ceremonies and public gatherings. It falls right in the best weather. Lake of Stars, a well-known music festival, has been held on the Lake Malawi shore in the past, but its dates and location have changed over the years, so check before you plan around it.
If you want comfort and clear skies, go from May to August. If you like quiet and don't mind heat, try late September or October. Avoid January and February unless rain doesn't bother you.
