May: dry-season start

May feels warm in the afternoon and pleasantly cool after dark. Rain is rare, skies are often clear, and the air is less sticky than during the wet months. It's a comfortable time to explore the city on foot or spend a few hours at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, where shaded paths make an easy break from town.

You can browse Old Town market without planning your day around showers. Long outdoor hikes are possible, but Lilongwe is better suited to a relaxed city visit than a big trail holiday. Evenings cool down, so a patio dinner may feel chilly later on.

Holidays and quieter streets

Malawi marks Labour Day on May 1 and Kamuzu Day on May 14. Some offices and shops may close for public holidays, so don't leave errands until those days. The holidays don't bring the huge visitor crowds found at major international festivals.

Families who prefer a calm city break will find May easier than the busy holiday period around Christmas and New Year.

Costs and local tips

May begins one of Lilongwe's best-weather stretches, which runs through August. Demand can pick up compared with the rainy months, so rooms may cost more than in the low season. Still, May is generally less busy than the peak midyear months, and you're unlikely to feel squeezed at the city's main sights.

For a practical local stop, visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in the morning, then take a taxi to Old Town for lunch. Ask for nsima, Malawi's staple maize dish, with relish on the side. Check whether the centre is open on public holidays before setting out.
