Visiting Valletta in September
September weather
September still feels like summer in Valletta, but the heat eases a little from August. Days are warm and often sunny, with humid air and occasional rain. The sea stays inviting, and you can enjoy the waterfront, café terraces and open-air sights without October's wetter weather.
The Upper Barrakka Gardens and St John's Co-Cathedral work well for sightseeing, while the city's stone streets can feel sticky in the afternoon. Save a longer walk around the bastions for later in the day. Rain can interrupt plans, so keep an indoor stop such as the National Museum of Archaeology in mind.
Feasts and holidays
September 8 is Victory Day, a public holiday marking the end of the Great Siege of Malta. Valletta's Our Lady of Victories church is central to the day, and you may find religious ceremonies and local celebrations around the city. Some businesses may close or change their hours.
Malta's Independence Day falls on September 21. Valletta often hosts official events, so the city can feel more crowded around ceremonies and gatherings. If you hate crowds, visit the main sights on a quieter weekday away from these holidays.
Crowds and getting around
Valletta is still popular in September, but the peak August rush has passed. You may find the streets and waterfront easier to enjoy, while prices can be less punishing than in high summer. It's not the quietest month, though, especially during public holidays.
For a handy change of scene, take the Barrakka Lift down to the Grand Harbour and catch a ferry to the Three Cities. The short crossing gives you a break from Valletta's hills and a lovely view back towards its walls. Check ferry times if you're travelling on a holiday.
