Visiting Valletta in June
June: warm and bright
Valletta in June feels properly summery. Days are warm, nights stay mild, and the air can feel sticky in the old stone streets. Rain is scarce, so you're unlikely to lose much sightseeing time to showers. With long daylight and plenty of sun, there's room for a slow evening stroll after the main sights.
The Upper Barrakka Gardens and St John's Co-Cathedral are good choices, but avoid long walks through exposed streets in the strongest afternoon sun. Take a cool break inside the cathedral, then explore again later. For a swim, catch a ferry across the harbour to Sliema and find a spot along the rocky shore.
Events and crowds
June brings Sette Giugno, a Maltese public holiday on the seventh. It marks the 1919 uprising, and Valletta holds commemorations. Some services and opening hours may change that day, so keep your plans flexible.
If you hate crowds, June is still easier than the peak of summer, but it's no longer quiet. Visitor numbers and prices tend to rise from May as the summer season gets going. July is hotter and drier, and usually busier, while May is cooler and wetter.
Make the most of the city
Travelling with kids? Use the Upper Barrakka Lift to get between the Grand Harbour waterfront and the city centre without tackling the steep steps. It's especially handy after a day exploring the harbour.
For a relaxed evening, wander Republic Street and settle in for pastizzi, flaky pastries often filled with ricotta or peas. The streets can feel warm even after sunset, so take your time and enjoy the cooler air by the harbour.
