Best Time to Visit Tijuana

Mild winters, wet but short

From December to March, Tijuana is cool and a bit damp. Days are mild, around 19°C, and nights feel chilly. January and February are the wettest months, with rain on six or seven days each. Showers tend to be short, so you can still walk Avenida Revolución or browse the shops and bars of Telmex-style new areas without a plan B. Cloud is common, so the sun isn't a given.

This is a good time for city breaks. You can wander the Centro Cultural Tijuana (the Cecut, with its big round Omnimax dome) and eat your way through Mercado Hidalgo without sweating. Tacos, Caesar salad (invented here, they say) and Baja Med restaurants all taste better when you're not wilting.

Spring and early summer: the sweet spot

April and May are dry and comfortable, with highs of 22°C to 24°C. Rain nearly disappears. May and June can bring grey mornings, a coastal haze locals call "June gloom", so don't count on blue skies before lunch. Playas de Tijuana, by the border fence, is pleasant for a walk then.

Spring suits almost any trip. Day trips to the Valle de Guadalupe wine country are easy, and the harvest festivals, the Fiestas de la Vendimia, run from late summer into early autumn. Tijuana's food scene also gets lively around spring, with restaurant events in Zona Río. Easter week (Semana Santa) brings Mexican families to the coast, so Rosarito beaches fill up then.

Late summer and autumn: hot, then perfect

July and August are the hottest months, with highs of 31°C and 32°C. They're rated Good rather than Excellent, and rain is almost absent. Afternoons feel warm, though the humidity is lower than in spring. School holidays bring more domestic visitors to the beaches, so Rosarito and Playas get busy at weekends. If you hate crowds, go midweek.

September and October are our favourites. It's still warm, at 27°C to 30°C, and you get the sunniest days of the year, about six hours a day in October. Crowds thin out. Travelling with kids? This is when the beach is easiest. November cools off, with the first showers arriving. Wine lovers should note that the vendimia (grape harvest) season in nearby Valle de Guadalupe peaks around this time of year, so book a tasting if you plan a day trip.
