October brings mild days and cool evenings to Srinagar. Afternoons are comfortable for walking around the old city or visiting the Mughal gardens. Rain is limited, so a shikara ride on Dal Lake or a stroll beside the Jhelum can fit easily into your day. The changing chinar leaves add colour to Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh.

You'll get less daylight than in September, and the sun can fade before a long outing feels finished. Save exposed walks for the middle of the day, and don't expect summer warmth after dark. October is a poor choice for high mountain routes that need reliable, warm conditions.

Autumn colour is the main draw. Visit the gardens for the chinar leaves, then take a shikara across Dal Lake while the air is still mild. Pampore, outside Srinagar, is known for saffron fields; the harvest season can fall in October, though timing varies. Dussehra may also take place in October, depending on the year, but it isn't a major local Kashmir event.

Families who enjoy gentle sightseeing will find the gardens and lake easier than long mountain hikes. For a local tip, ask your shikara boatman to pass the floating gardens on Dal Lake, where crops grow on woven beds of lake plants.

Crowds and costs

October is part of Srinagar's popular autumn season, and visitors come for the chinar colours. It's generally livelier than winter, when cold weather brings fewer tourists, but it avoids the summer holiday rush. Guesthouses and houseboats can cost more than in quieter winter months, especially around the gardens and Dal Lake.

The weather is usually good for sightseeing, but don't treat every day as dry: October still gets some rain. A light shower can interrupt a lake outing, so keep a garden visit or the old city as a flexible alternative.
