Visiting Singapore in January
January: warm and very wet
January feels hot, sticky and often cloudy, with frequent showers. Rain falls on many days, so you may need to pause a walk while a downpour passes. December is wetter, while February is drier; January still isn't a great month for long outdoor plans.
You can mix indoor sights like the National Gallery Singapore with covered stops at Marina Bay. Sentosa's beaches are still warm, but grey skies and rain can cut into beach time. Save exposed walks, such as the Southern Ridges, for a clearer spell.
Festivals and neighbourhoods
Pongal, a Tamil harvest festival, usually takes place in January. In Little India, look for colourful decorations and celebrations around Serangoon Road. Singapore Art Week also brings exhibitions and events across the city. Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January, but its date changes each year.
Travelling with kids? Little India's festive displays make for an easy outing, with indoor food stops nearby if the rain starts.
Crowds and costs
January can feel busy around New Year, then quieter after the holiday rush. It's not usually as packed as Chinese New Year periods, which can fall in January or February. Hotel prices may be higher around New Year, while the rest of the month is less predictably busy. February and March tend to offer better weather for sightseeing.
For a rain-friendly Little India visit, take the MRT to Little India station and use the underground links and covered walkways near the station. You'll reach Serangoon Road without spending the whole trip in the rain.
