When to visit Singapore

One island, one climate

Singapore is a single city-state, so there's no regional puzzle to solve. The weather is much the same from Marina Bay to Sentosa. It's hot and humid all year, and the real question is how much rain you'll get.

Our pick is February and March. Days are easier to plan, and you can walk through Chinatown or the Gardens by the Bay without ducking into a mall every hour. Expect warm, sticky air either way, but fewer soakings.

Hot months and wet months

April is the hottest month, at 31°C. Afternoons feel heavy, so spend midday in the National Gallery or the cool domes at Gardens by the Bay. Save hawker centres (open-air food courts) like Maxwell Food Centre for the evening.

November is the wettest, with 329 mm of rain. The rain usually comes as loud, short downpours, but some days stay grey for hours. The upside is that the city feels greener and a bit less crowded. Keep an umbrella handy and use the MRT (the metro), which links most sights under cover.

Holidays, events and crowds

Chinese New Year usually lands in late January or February. Chinatown glows with lanterns and the streets get busy. Hotels fill up, and some family-run shops close for a few days. Other big dates are Hari Raya Puasa (the end of Ramadan), Deepavali (the Hindu festival of lights, celebrated in Little India) and National Day on 9 August, with parades and fireworks.

The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix usually takes place around September or October. It's thrilling if you love racing, but rooms near Marina Bay get tight.

High and low season

Travel is busiest around school holidays, especially June to July and December. Changi Airport is packed then, and prices rise. If you want quieter streets, aim for the shoulder months outside those windows. Late February and March give you the best mix of manageable weather and calmer crowds, once Chinese New Year is over.
