Shenzhen Weather in January

January feels mild

January is one of the best months to be outdoors in Shenzhen, and it scores an excellent 9.9 out of 10 on our comfort score. Days reach about 20°C and nights dip to 13°C. You'll see some cloud and the occasional shower, but rain doesn't last long, so walks and sightseeing usually feel comfortable.

Try the paths at Shenzhen Bay Park, or climb part of Wutong Mountain. It's also a good time to explore the city on foot without summer's sticky heat. The sea can feel cool, so January isn't the best month for long swims, and rain can still interrupt a beach day at Dameisha.

Holidays and crowds

New Year's Day is a public holiday, though it rarely brings a long break on its own. Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January, and when it does, expect a much busier travel period, with crowded stations and some local shops closing.

If crowds put you off, avoid the Spring Festival rush. Outside that period, January sits in the middle of the November-to-February window, with December and February nearly as good. Shenzhen is also less of a classic holiday destination than nearby Hong Kong. Prices can rise around the festival, so quieter weeks may be kinder to your budget than peak holiday dates.

A cool day, well spent

January suits city breaks, markets and outdoor sights. Spend a clear afternoon around OCT Loft, where former factory buildings now house cafés and art spaces. If clouds gather, the Shenzhen Museum gives you an indoor option near Civic Center.

Travelling with kids? Choose Shenzhen Bay Park for an easy waterfront stroll, then head indoors if the weather turns.

For a local food stop, try a bowl of rice rolls in the older streets around Dongmen. On damp evenings, bring a thin jacket for the walk back to the metro.
