December: cold and snowy

Sapporo feels properly wintry in December. Days hover around freezing, while nights dip below it. Snow and damp weather are common, and the short, cloudy days can make sightseeing feel chilly. Odori Park's paths may be slippery, so long outdoor walks take more effort.

You can still enjoy the city's winter lights and warm up with miso ramen in Susukino. The Sapporo Beer Museum is a good indoor stop, too. Skip exposed hikes around Mount Moiwa if trails are icy; take the ropeway instead.

Lights and holiday crowds

The Sapporo White Illumination lights up Odori Park and other parts of the city. Odori also hosts a German Christmas Market, usually through December 25, with food and stalls. It's a cosy evening outing, though the open park can feel bitterly cold.

Families who enjoy festive lights may find December more fun than a quiet city break. The month is generally less busy and often cheaper than February, when the Snow Festival draws large crowds. Expect more holiday visitors and higher hotel prices around Christmas and New Year. Some businesses close over the New Year period.

Getting around in the cold

For sightseeing, use Chi-Ka-Ho, the underground walkway linking Sapporo Station with Odori. It continues toward Susukino through underground shopping areas, so you can avoid much of the wind and snow between stops. It's especially handy when wet snow turns sidewalks slushy.

December's low cloud and limited sunshine can also make distant views less reliable. Save a Mount Moiwa visit for a clearer evening, and enjoy the city's indoor sights when the weather closes in.
