When to go to Sapporo: a seasonal guide
June: the sweet spot
June is our top pick for Sapporo. Days are mild at around 21°C, nights are cool, and it's the one month the comfort score calls Excellent. Rain is lighter than you might expect, with only 11 wet days. Hokkaido also skips the heavy rainy season that hits most of Japan.
It's a good month for walking. Odori Park is green, Hokkaido University's campus is lovely for a stroll, and Moerenuma Park is easy to cycle around. Early June brings the YOSAKOI Soran Festival, where dance teams in bright costumes fill the streets. The Hokkaido Shrine Festival happens in mid-June too. May is a close second, and cherry blossoms often peak around early May, which is late compared with Tokyo.
July to October: warm, then wet, then fall colour
July and August are the warmest months, though not scorching. August is the wettest at 170 mm, and its rating is Poor, so expect some grey days. Still, Hokkaido is cooler than Tokyo or Osaka, which is why Japanese families head here in summer. Crowds and prices rise around the school holidays and Obon, the mid-August holiday. Odori Park hosts the Sapporo Summer Festival, with beer gardens under the trees. If you want to taste the local beer, this is the time.
September is a quiet, comfortable month and rates Good. Autumn food is a big draw, from crab to grilled corn. By October it's cooler and wetter, with 16 rainy days. Still, the leaves in Jozankei, a hot-spring town about an hour from the centre, are worth the trip. Soak in an outdoor bath while it drizzles.
November to April: snow season
Winter is long and properly snowy. January and February are the coldest, with highs of -3°C and lows of -9°C. Both months tie, and both have little sun. The sky is often grey, but the snow is the point. The Sapporo Snow Festival in early February draws big crowds, and hotels fill up early. Skiers do better in January and February, when nearby resorts like Kiroro and Sapporo Teine have deep powder.
Winter evenings feel cosy. Think miso ramen in Ramen Alley, hot soup curry, and warm underground walkways that connect the main station to Odori. In December, the Munich Christmas Market and the White Illumination light up the city centre. March is still snowy and rates Poor. April is Fair, as the snow melts and the streets get slushy.
