When to go to Saitama: a seasonal guide
November to April: the easy half
November is our top pick, and it makes sense once you're there. Days are mild, around 16°C, and the rain mostly stops. Ginkgo and maple leaves turn in places like Musashi Kyuryo National Government Park and the Hikawa Shrine approach in Omiya. Evenings are cool enough for a bowl of hot udon. Saitama is known for its thick, chewy udon, so it's worth ordering.
December to February is cold and fairly dry. Mornings drop below freezing, but the sun shows up for around six hours a day. On clear days you can see Mt Fuji from parts of the region. Early February is plum season, so look for blossoms in Ome-style gardens and parks. Early March can still feel raw, though rain picks up.
April is the cherry blossom month. The rows of trees along the Arakawa and in Omiya Park draw local picnic crowds. It's lovely, but weekends get busy. If you like quiet, go on a weekday morning.
June to September: hot, wet and sticky
Be honest with yourself here. The rainy season starts in June, and the air stays heavy through September. July has the most rainy days, 20 of them. August is the hottest at 32°C, and September is the wettest month with 204 mm. Typhoon season also peaks in late summer, so keep your plans flexible.
Still, summer has its own charm. Fireworks and festivals fill the evenings. The Kawagoe Kitain and Hikawa Shrine areas hang wind chimes in summer, and the old Kawagoe streets are pleasant after the heat fades. Stick to indoor stops in the afternoons, like the Railway Museum in Omiya, which is great with kids and rarely feels like a chore in the rain.
May and October: the in-betweens
May is warm, around 24°C, and green. It's a solid choice if you want comfortable walking and thinner crowds after Golden Week, the national holiday run at the start of the month, when families travel and trains fill up. Avoid that week if you can.
October is Fair, not Good. Days are still mild at 22°C, but it's wet, and the sky is often grey. Treat it as a bargain shoulder month, and keep a flexible plan for the weekend.
Saitama is mostly a day-trip and city-break place, close to Tokyo. That keeps it steady all year, with no real low season. The crowds follow holidays and blossom or leaf peaks rather than the weather. For the best mix of comfort and calm, aim for November, or pick a clear week in December.
