Heat and afternoon rain

December feels hot, sticky and often cloudy in Santa Cruz. Highs reach 32°C, with warm nights around 23°C. Rain falls on 14 days, so showers can interrupt a day out. Long walks around Parque El Arenal or sightseeing in the historic centre feel tiring in the afternoon.

The city still works well for shorter outings. See the Cathedral and Plaza 24 de Septiembre between showers, then settle into a café while the rain passes. Save outdoor plans for a cooler part of the day, and don't count on clear skies for a full day trip.

Christmas in the city

Christmas Eve, or Nochebuena, is an important family celebration. Expect a quieter feel in some parts of town as people gather at home, then a festive mood around Christmas and New Year. Plaza 24 de Septiembre is a handy place to see the centre's seasonal decorations.

Crowds and local tips

December is a holiday month, so travel can pick up around Christmas and New Year. Prices may be higher then than in quieter months such as June and July, which are also better for weather. Outside the holiday rush, the rain and heat can mean a less crowded visit, but the weather is a real trade-off.

For a practical local move, use a taxi to reach Parque Urbano from the plaza if a storm breaks; walking across town in heavy rain can be unpleasant. If you're heading to the market, try majadito, a Santa Cruz rice dish, for a filling meal indoors.
