When to go to Santa Cruz de la Sierra: a seasonal guide
May to August: the sweet spot
This is the best stretch, and June and July top our comfort score. Days are warm rather than hot, with highs around 26–27°C, and evenings cool off enough that you'll want a light jacket on a terrace. July is the driest month, with rain on only five days. August is just as dry, though it starts to warm up again.
It's a good time for walking around the main square, Plaza 24 de Septiembre, and the cathedral next to it. You can also spend a full day at the Lomas de Arena dunes without a storm cutting it short. Day trips to the Jesuit mission towns of Chiquitania, like San José de Chiquitos, are easier on dry roads. Many of the missions are UNESCO-listed, and their churches are lovely.
Expect a few cold snaps. Southern winds called surazos can drop temperatures sharply for a day or two. It's rarely freezing, but it surprises people who packed only for the tropics.
September to November: hot and getting wetter
September is still fairly dry, and the humidity is low at 49%. By October and November it's hotter, with highs around 33°C, and afternoon storms come back. These months are fine for a city break if you plan indoor time, such as the museums or a long lunch of locro (a thick chicken and rice soup) or a plate of majadito (rice with dried meat).
Late September brings the city's anniversary on the 24th, with parades and events around the main plaza. It's a lively time to be there, so expect more people downtown.
December to April: wet and sticky
December to March is the rainy season, and January is the wettest month, with 174 mm. Rain falls on more than half the days in the peak months. Downpours can flood streets, and the sky stays grey, with under 4 hours of sun a day. Mornings are often your best window.
Carnival, usually in February, is the big event. If you love street parties, water play and costumes, it's worth putting up with the damp. If you want quiet sightseeing, skip it. Hotels fill, and Bolivian families travel over the holiday.
April is a good in-between choice. The rain eases, the heat softens, and it's much less crowded than the dry months.
