When to go to Sucre: a seasonal guide
April to November: the dry season
Sucre has a mild, high-altitude climate. Days are pleasantly warm all year, and the real change is in the nights and the rain. From May to August it's dry and sunny, with clear blue skies over the white colonial rooftops. Evenings get properly cold, though. July is the chilliest month, with lows around 4°C, so you'll want a jacket for dinner on Plaza 25 de Mayo.
September to November warms up slowly. Afternoons reach the mid-20s, and showers return in small doses. If you want sunshine without the cold nights, October and November are a good middle ground.
December to March: the rainy season
Rain arrives in December and peaks in January, with rain on around 18 days of the month. It's usually a heavy shower rather than a washout, and mornings are often clearer. Streets can get slick on Sucre's steep cobbles, and dirt roads out to villages may turn muddy or close.
March is a pleasant surprise. It's rated Excellent, the rain is easing, and the hills around the city are bright green. If you're on a budget and don't mind a few showers, February and March are worth a look. Trekking in the Cordillera de los Frailes is best left for the dry months, when tracks are firm and views are clear.
Crowds and events
Sucre never gets overwhelmed, but the dry months are the busiest. Most international visitors come between June and September, often combining Sucre with Potosí and the Uyuni salt flats. Even then, the city feels calm. Book a room early only around big festivals.
Carnival falls in February or early March, with water fights in the streets. Expect to get wet, whatever the sky is doing. On Easter weekend, processions wind through the old town. The Fiesta de la Virgen de Guadalupe, Sucre's patron festival, fills the first half of September with music, dance and parades. It's the one to plan around. On 25 May, the city celebrates the first cry for independence in Latin America, and the Casa de la Libertad museum is the place to be.
Travelling with kids? Aim for the dry months, when mornings are bright and you can spend more time outside, like at the Parque Cretácico dinosaur footprints. If you hate crowds, pick late April, May or October.
