Christmas traditions

December is the start of Puerto Rico's long Christmas season, called Las Navidades. You may hear parrandas, groups singing Christmas songs as they visit homes, and find special church services called Misas de Aguinaldo. Christmas Eve, or Nochebuena, is a major family celebration. Roast pork and arroz con gandules often appear at the table.

San Juan gets busier and more expensive around Christmas and New Year than in quieter months. The holiday rush is strongest near the end of December. January to March is the best-weather stretch, so December brings festive energy before that peak season.

After rain, the blue cobblestones in Old San Juan can be slippery. Take care on the slopes around Calle Fortaleza, especially when heading towards El Morro. If showers interrupt your walk, duck into a café for a mallorca, a soft sweet bread roll often served with ham and cheese.
