April's changing weather

San José stays warm in April, with afternoons near 28°C and cooler evenings around 18°C. It's still a good month for the National Theatre, the Gold Museum and a wander through Barrio Amón. Rain falls on many days, though, and cloud can linger, so don't count on clear views from the city's hills.

April is much wetter than March, and May brings even more rain. Showers can interrupt outdoor plans, especially later in the day. Keep long walks around La Sabana Park flexible, and save an indoor museum for when the sky turns grey.

Easter and local crowds

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, sometimes falls in April. It's a major holiday in Costa Rica, and many locals travel or visit family. San José can feel quieter as businesses close, while popular travel routes get busy. Dates change each year, so check whether Easter falls during your stay.

April also includes Juan Santamaría Day on April 11. The main celebrations are in Alajuela, not central San José, but the holiday can affect local services and transport. Around Easter, expect higher demand and prices than in quieter months. Outside that holiday period, April is generally less sought-after than the dry-season peak.

A good fit for city breaks

Families who prefer museums and relaxed city walks can enjoy April, as long as they leave room for rain delays. For a practical stop, head to San José's Central Market for a casado, a filling meal with rice, beans and other sides. It's an easy place to duck inside when a shower starts.

April's mix of warm days and frequent rain suits a flexible city visit better than a tightly timed outdoor itinerary. If you're planning a day trip from the city, leave extra room for weather changes on the road.
