September feels cool rather than hot, but it's very wet and cloudy. Rain falls on most days, and the air stays damp. Expect showers to interrupt walks around downtown San José, even when the morning looks clear.

You can still visit the National Museum or Teatro Nacional between showers. Save long outdoor plans for a flexible day, and skip relying on clear views from nearby hills. The Central Market is a good rainy-day stop for a bowl of olla de carne, a local beef and vegetable stew.

Independence celebrations

September brings Costa Rica's Independence Day on September 15. In San José, look for school parades and flags around the city centre. The evening before, children often carry faroles, or handmade lanterns, in local celebrations.

Families who enjoy community events may find the parades more rewarding than a full day of sightseeing. Rain can disrupt outdoor plans, so keep a nearby café or museum in mind if showers arrive.

Fewer visitors

September is part of the rainy season, so San José sees fewer tourists than during the drier February and March peak. Hotels may cost less than in those popular months, though prices vary. Independence celebrations can make the centre busier around the event itself.

For the lantern festivities, choose a spot near Parque Central or the National Theatre, then check local street access before heading out. Wet pavements and traffic can make short distances take longer.
