May feels cool and changeable in Salzburg. Afternoons can reach 18°C, but rain falls on 19 days on average, and clouds often soften the mountain views. You can stroll Getreidegasse, visit Mirabell Gardens or take in the old town between showers. Wet paths make longer hikes less appealing, especially on wooded trails around Mönchsberg.

For families, the compact old town is easy to explore in short stretches, with cafés and museums close by when rain sets in.

May events and holidays

The Salzburg Marathon is usually held in May, bringing runners and spectators into the city. Expect some road closures around race day, so check local transport routes if you're visiting then. May 1 is a public holiday in Austria; some shops may close, though sights and restaurants can have their own hours.

The summer Salzburg Festival hasn't started yet, so the city feels less event-packed than in July and August.

May is spring shoulder season: generally calmer than Salzburg's summer festival months, but busier than the quietest winter weeks. Accommodation can be less costly than during the festival, though prices vary by date and demand. September and October are also popular times to visit.

When showers reach the old town, ride the FestungsBahn funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. You can explore its indoor rooms and look over the rooftops when the clouds lift. For a drier cultural stop, Mozart's Birthplace on Getreidegasse is right in the centre.
