Visiting Salzburg in August
August weather in Salzburg
August is mild rather than reliably sunny. Highs reach 23°C, but rain falls on 17 days, and the humid air can make afternoons feel sticky. Showers often interrupt walks, so you'll enjoy the riverside paths and gardens most when the sky is clear. If rain is your main worry, Vienna, Ljubljana and Venice all have better weather this month.
Even so, you can still fill your days. Explore the Old Town, visit Hohensalzburg Fortress, or spend a wet spell inside Mozart's birthplace. If you plan to hike up Mönchsberg, check the sky before you set out, because wet paths make the climb less pleasant. And don't count on a full day at the outdoor swimming spots.
Festivals and summer crowds
The Salzburg Festival fills much of August with opera, concerts and theatre. It's a special time for music lovers, but all those visitors push up hotel prices. On August 15, the public holiday of the Assumption of Mary, church services take place and some shops may close.
Families who enjoy music and city walks can have a lovely trip, but you'll want a rainy-day plan for the children.
Expect busy lanes around Getreidegasse and queues at popular sights. August is high season, so it's busier and pricier than September and October, which are the best months overall. If you can be flexible, September is a good alternative: it's cooler at 20°C and gets noticeably less rain, at 114 mm.
A local tip for wet spells
When rain sets in, keep Salzburg Cathedral and St Peter's Abbey in mind. Both sit right in the Old Town, so you can step indoors without losing much sightseeing time. St Peter's Cemetery is worth a look when it's dry, but its paths are less appealing after a downpour.
For a practical festival-night stop, try a café near the Festspielhaus before a performance. You'll be close to the venues, and you won't have to cross town if the weather turns.
