Mild days, passing showers

May feels like a proper spring month in Vienna. Afternoons can reach 20°C, while mornings and evenings are cooler, around 9°C. Rain falls often, so expect changeable skies rather than a stretch of reliably sunny days.

It's a good time for long walks around the Ringstrasse, outdoor tables in the MuseumsQuartier and visits to Schönbrunn's gardens. A shower can interrupt a picnic or a day in the Prater, so keep a museum or café in mind as a backup. The weather is less suited to planning every day around outdoor activities.

Festivals and a holiday

The Wiener Festwochen, Vienna's performing arts festival, usually starts in May and brings theatre, music and dance to venues across the city. On May Day, many shops close for the public holiday, though central sights and some cafés still welcome visitors.

For couples who enjoy a slower city break, May's mild evenings are lovely for a walk along the Danube Canal, followed by dinner in the nearby Leopoldstadt district.

Crowds, costs and a local tip

May is a popular spring month, with more visitors and firmer hotel prices than in the quieter winter months. It's generally less hectic than the height of summer, but Schönbrunn and the historic centre can still feel busy, especially on sunny weekends. April is often a better-value spring choice; June is warmer, but just as rainy.

At Schönbrunn, take the tram to the palace rather than walking from the city centre. You'll save your energy for the hill up to the Gloriette, where the views reach across the gardens and rooftops.
