If you love museums and theatre, October can suit you better than a summer visit. If you're coming for sunny walks and outdoor cafés, you'll likely find it a letdown.

Crowds thin after the busy May-to-September stretch, and accommodation prices are generally lower than in summer. The trade-off is less daylight and weather that can disrupt plans.

Use the Admiralty metro station for the Hermitage and Palace Square, then keep the museum as your backup for a rainy afternoon. For a warm local meal, try borscht or pelmeni in a café around Nevsky Prospekt. Check the Mariinsky's schedule before choosing an evening, since performances vary.
