Crowds are usually thinner than in June and September, so the main sights feel calmer and stays may cost less than in summer. Festival dates can still bring extra visitors to central Riga, though, so check the calendar before you book.

For couples who enjoy museums, films and cosy café stops, October can suit a slower city break. Families may find wet afternoons harder, so keep indoor options in mind.

When the rain sets in, head to Riga Central Market. Its old zeppelin hangars hold food stalls and indoor aisles, so you can browse and sample local snacks without getting soaked. The market sits near the coach and train stations, which makes it an easy stop in a day around central Riga.
