May weather on the waterfront

May feels mild in Saint Helier, with daytime highs around 15°C and cooler evenings. Rain falls on 12 days, but showers don't usually rule out a day of sightseeing. The long daylight makes it easier to fit in a walk around the harbour, the Central Market and Elizabeth Castle.

The weather is changeable, though: cloud is common, and the sea can feel chilly. May works better for town walks and coastal views than for long beach days or swimming. If you're hoping for reliable sun, June to September is a safer bet.

Liberation Day and spring

Liberation Day on 9 May marks the end of the German occupation of Jersey in 1945. Saint Helier holds public celebrations, often centred on Liberation Square. It's a meaningful time to visit, but expect more people around the town centre during events.

If you hate crowds, explore the shops and cafés around the Central Market on a quieter weekday, then visit the Jersey Museum, Art Gallery and Victorian House nearby. May also includes UK-style bank holidays, which can bring more visitors to the island.

A quieter time to visit

May is spring shoulder season: generally quieter than the busy summer months, with less pressure on accommodation than in July and August. It's a good choice if you want to enjoy Saint Helier's streets without peak-season crowds, though prices can rise around bank holidays and Liberation Day.

Travelling with kids? Take the bus from town to Elizabeth Castle when the causeway is covered; check the tide times first, as the walk across is only possible at low tide. If rain rolls in, the covered Central Market is an easy stop for local produce and a warm drink.
