When to go to Saint Helier: a seasonal guide
June to September: the easy season
This is when Saint Helier works best. Days are mild rather than hot, and evenings stay comfortable on the seafront at Havre des Pas. July and August are the warmest, with a tie at 20°C for the daytime high. You can swim at Bel Royal or the Havre des Pas lido, an open-air seawater pool. The water is still bracing, though.
It's also the busiest time. Families arrive in the UK school holidays, mostly late July and August, and ferries and flights from Poole and the UK fill up. If you hate crowds, aim for June or September. Both rate Excellent, and you'll get quieter coastal paths and easier tables in the restaurants around the Central Market.
Events cluster here too. The Jersey Battle of Flowers parade has traditionally run in August, and the Jersey Air Display is usually in September. Dates shift each year, so check them before you book.
April, May and October: the in-betweens
Spring is fresh and fairly dry. April is the driest month in the data, with 45 mm of rain, and May is only a little wetter. Days are cool but bright, which suits walking the cliff paths on the north coast or climbing up to Elizabeth Castle's causeway at low tide. Travelling with kids? The causeway crossing is a highlight, but check tide times. The path floods, and the castle ferry runs when the water is up.
May also brings the Jersey Walking Festival in some years, so look for it if you like organised walks.
October is a gamble. Rain jumps to 82 mm on 15 days, and sunshine drops to 2.5 hours a day. You might still get a calm, golden afternoon, but don't count on it.
November to March: quiet and grey
Winter is damp and dull. Rain falls on 17 days in January, November and December, and the sun barely shows. Highs sit around 9°C to 10°C. Many seasonal cafés and beach kiosks close, and some attractions cut their hours.
So why come? Prices and crowds drop, and Saint Helier works as a cosy city break. You can spend a day in the Jersey Museum, poke around the Central Market, or eat fresh seafood while the wind rattles the windows. Hotels are often cheaper too.
February and March are still cool, but the days start to lengthen. If you want a short, low-cost trip and don't mind a waterproof jacket, March is the best of the cold months.
