October: warm and mostly settled

October feels warm without the heavier rain that arrives later in the year. Days reach about 25°C, with humid air and showers on some days. You'll still get plenty of sunshine, so it's a good month for walking around central Saint-Denis, visiting the Jardin de l'État or browsing the market on Rue du Maréchal-Leclerc.

The weather also suits a trip to the coast, though Saint-Denis itself isn't known for swimming beaches. Save long inland hikes for a day with a clear forecast; cloud and showers can make mountain views less reliable. November is warmer and wetter, while September is a little drier.

Grand Raid and holiday season

The Grand Raid, Reunion's famous long-distance mountain race, usually takes place in October. Its runners finish at Stade de la Redoute in Saint-Denis, bringing a lively race-week feel to the city. The exact dates change, so check the event calendar before travelling.

October also falls around the French Toussaint school holiday, though dates vary. If you hate crowds, avoid race week and the holiday period. Outside those busy spells, October is often quieter and better value than the July and August high season. Rooms near the finish may be harder to find during the race.

Travelling with kids? The Jardin de l'État is an easy break from city streets, with shady paths and the Natural History Museum nearby. For a taste of local cooking, look for a cari at a Saint-Denis restaurant; it's a Creole stew, often served with rice and beans.

One useful local tip: if you're watching the Grand Raid, head to Stade de la Redoute rather than expecting runners to pass through the city centre. The finish is the place to see the race's final moments.
