October feels warmer than September, with afternoons reaching 25°C and cooler evenings near 13°C. Showers are common, falling on about half the days, but there's still plenty of sunshine between them. The heavier rains usually arrive in November, so October is a useful in-between month for exploring.

Plan city sights around the showers. You can visit the Rova of Antananarivo, walk through the old Haute-Ville, or browse Analakely's markets when the streets are dry. Wet roads and traffic can make longer cross-city trips slow, so don't cram too many neighbourhoods into one day.

What to do

October 14 is Republic Day, marking the proclamation of the Malagasy Republic. Public events may affect traffic or opening hours, so ask locally before setting out. For a quieter cultural stop, the Museum of Photography in Haute-Ville offers a good break from a rainy spell.

For families, short visits to the Rova and nearby old-town streets are easier to manage than a packed day of cross-city sightseeing.

October is generally a shoulder-season month: it's before the wetter November period and tends to be calmer than the busiest travel months. You may find better accommodation value than in peak season, though prices vary by hotel and demand. September is drier, so it's a stronger choice if rain would spoil your plans.

At the Rova, wear shoes with a good grip for the steep, sometimes slick paths. Then try romazava, a local meat-and-greens stew, at a nearby restaurant. Keep your plans flexible; a shower can turn a short walk into a slow trip through Tana's traffic.
