When to go to Palermo: a seasonal guide
Spring and early summer: the sweet spot
April to June is when Palermo works best. In April the days are mild and you can walk all afternoon between the Cappella Palatina, the Quattro Canti crossroads and the Ballarò market without getting tired. Showers still pass through, so keep an umbrella handy. By May it's warm and mostly dry, and the evenings suit a plate of pasta con le sarde (pasta with sardines) outside.
June is hotter and very sunny, with little rain. It's a good month for Mondello, the city's sandy beach, which is a short bus ride away. The sea is warming up, and you can swim without the August crowds. Palermo's big festival, the Festino di Santa Rosalia, runs on 14 and 15 July, with a parade and fireworks. It's a good reason to come in early July if you don't mind the heat.
July and August: hot and busy
July and August are the hottest months, and they tie at 32°C for the daytime high. Nights stay warm too, so sleeping without air conditioning can be hard. Italian school holidays and the August break around Ferragosto (15 August) bring Italian families to the coast. Many locals head for the beach, and some small shops and restaurants close for a week or two.
If you love beach days, this is your season. Plan sightseeing for the morning, then head to the sea. Churches and the cool halls of Palazzo dei Normanni make good midday stops. If heat wears you down, pick another month.
September to November: warm sea, then rain
September is a treat. It's still warm, the sea holds its summer heat, and the biggest crowds have gone. October and November are rated Excellent too, but they're wetter, with rain on 11 to 12 days a month. Showers tend to be short, and the city still feels easy to explore. This suits food lovers. Street food like panelle (chickpea fritters) and sfincione (thick, spongy Sicilian pizza) tastes best on a cooler day.
Winter: quiet and soft
December to March is mild, grey and damp. Sun is limited, with only three or four hours a day in December and January. The upside is space. You'll have the Monreale cathedral mosaics and the Teatro Massimo mostly to yourself, and hotels are usually at their cheapest. Travelling on a budget? This is your window. Just don't expect beach weather. Pack a rain jacket and plan indoor days for museums and markets.
